Don't Miss These Tricks of Teaching 'EXPRESSING GROUP ROUTINE/HABITS' in Form One.

Welcome to UNIT 7:0!

Review: Previously in Unit 6:0, we discussed about how to teach various topics such; ‘Expressing personal routine/habits’ for Form One; ‘Talking about visits’ for Form Two; ‘Identifying and analysing setting, main plot, and characters’ for Form Three; and ‘Identifying and analysing setting, main plot, and characters’ for From Four.

In this Unit 7:1, we will learn how to teach the sub topic, Expressing group routine/habits’ in Form One. In this sub topic, we will practically focus on how to guide students to talk about their class or group routines/habits.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE COMPREHENSIVE TEACHING GUIDE ON THE SUB TOPIC:

A: INFORMATION OF THE TOPIC:
1. Topic: EXPRESSING PERSONAL AND GROUP ROUTINE/HABITS.
2. Sub Topic: Expressing group routine/habits.
3. Periods per sub topic: 08
4: Class: Form One.
B: HOW TO TEACH THE TOPIC:

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The aim of this sub topic is to enable student to be able to talk about class routine/habits. Beyond class activities, students are going to be introduced to the group routines like friends, teams and families so that they can be more interactive with their social environments apart from school.

ACTIVITIES OR GAMES TO FACILITATE THE LESSON

ACTIVITY 1: BRAINSTORMING ON THE PREVIOUS LESSON.
  •   Guide students to revise ways of telling time they learnt in the previous lesson. Tell them to learn by heart these ways of telling time because they are going to apply them during this lesson as well. (See Link).
  •   Students are also to be reminded of how to ask question forms with ‘when?’ and ‘What time?’ as ways of asking time.
  •   Also remind them the vocabulary of daily routines they learnt during the previous lesson. Put a great emphasis that they are going to be applied in this lesson once again.
  •   Some simple vocabularies on daily routines are mostly imperatives such as: Get up; have a shower; Have breakfast; go to school; Go home; do my home; watch TV; got to bed.
  •   Finally, the students are guided to practise the present simple, 1st and 3rd person singular. The use of correct tense will make them be able to correctly express the daily routines.
ACTIVITY 2: EXPRESSING GROUP’S DAILY ROUTINE.
In this activity, the teacher uses pictures to demonstrate expressing habits of everyday activities of a given class. A teacher does not have to use cartoons or pictures from the books at the first time. He/she can use textbook pictures or cartoons after using real pictures from students’ experiences in real life.

A teacher can display a class picture he/she has collected from the students. Students should have been asked to come with pictures of the whole class. The picture may be the one they took when they were at a certain function like Welcome Form One Ceremony, Graduation Ceremony, or any event where they were together. For example, when I take my picture with my students like the one below, I can use it to express various activities that we do or they do together as a group. Ask the students to use their own picture (or the picture of which some of them are in it) and orally express what these students in the picture can do together as a group.
(Picture- Karema School Gazette Team).

  1.  We are School Gazette Club Team:
  2.  We wake up early every day.
  3.  We do personal cleanliness every morning.
  4.  We clean our areas and water flowers every morning.
  5.  We go to parade at 7:30 am.
  6.  We write for the School Gazette every week.
  7.  Our School Gazette comes out every Monday.
  8.  We like to share stories with our fellow students.
After that, guide students to form groups. In these groups, allow them to discuss and state the activities they can do as group. They should discuss the following guiding questions:
  • What are the correct words to express daily routines?
  • What are the correct ways of telling and asking time when expressing daily routines? And
  • What are the correct simple present tense sentences to be used when expressing daily routines?
Then, prepare the simple flashcards and display them to each group to see if they have understood the patterns well.
(Get up; have a shower; Have breakfast; go to school; Go home; do my home; watch TV; got to bed). After showing a flashcard to the group, the particular group should say the correct sentence concerning the picture on the card.

Show the students in pairs these pictures and each pair or group will have to say a sentence that is correct according to the picture and the activity taking place or a daily activity that may take place.
In the Daily Routine column that is empty, students have to fill the appropriate sentences like these below:

We get up at ___________________
We take a shower at _____________
We have a breakfast at ___________
We go to school at ______________
We go home at _________________
We do our homework every day at ___________
We watch TV at ______________
We go to bed at _______________

ACTIVITY 3: EXPRESSING DAILY ROUTINE OF OTHER GROUPS.
In this activity, the students should describe daily routine of other group of learners by using the correct simple present tense and third personal pronouns.
For example, expressing daily routine of other groups like School Gazette Club mentioned earlier, they can be expressed as follows:
School Gazette Club Daily Routine:
  1.  They wake up early every day.
  2.  They have personal cleanliness every morning.
  3.  They clean our areas and water flowers every morning.
  4.  They go to parade at 7:30 am.
  5.  They write for the School Gazette every week.
  6.  Their School Gazette comes out every Monday.
  7.  They like to share stories with their fellow students.

NOTE: In this part, Simple Present Tense and Third Personal Pronoun Plural have to be practised so that the students can how daily routines can be expressed for particular groups.

ACTIVITY 4: ORAL PRESENTATIONS OF DAILY ROUTINES.
The students to prepare oral presentations on their daily routine. The teacher to guide students to write about their daily routine through guided activities. In this part, students will have the opportunity to practise their own group routines orally.

6: CONNECTION: Beyond the Sub Topic. This sub topic helps students to master Simple Present tense and use of proper third personal pronouns.

7: NOTE: Just like other English grammar practices, Expressing Group Routines with simple present tense and third personal pronouns can be forgotten by the students if they are not practised with speaking English so as to be familiar with the patterns. If students are not encouraged to speak, all what they have learnt will be lost as well. Thus why, it’s normal to find a student form upper secondary level is complaining about his or her inability to comprehend tenses. But he there is only one problem: he or she did not practise the tenses by speaking, AND TENSES  AND PARTS OF SPEECH ARE NOT TO BE LEARNT AND KEPT IN THE HEAD, BUT ARE LEARNT TO BE SPOKEN. And this is like a rule to the whole English language subject. We teachers should teach our students by making them practice what we teach them.
